Many will sit on a brilliant idea for years, but do not start as they wait for some lucky break to come their way or someone to offer them an opportunity. There is a saying of; It is not who you are but who you know. Surely people do play a major role in your life, but you really don’t need people to start. If an opportunity is offered to you or you have seen others been offered great opportunities, good for them. Life has taught me that it is not the rule but rather the exception.

Another reason why people don’t start is that they believe the lie that you need money to make money. If you have not read my book This is the Day yet, just read the short version of my story on the About page, but I suggest you get the book in the Book store and read it. The truth is, you need vision and will power more than you need money. Read my comments after you read this post from Brian Rose.

The below post is copied from an e-mail I received from – Brian Rose, Founder & Host of London Real.

Note: The underlining was added by me. If you read the whole post, I believe it will make sense.

Hi there

2018 has been my best year yet.

I was challenged to do my first IRONMAN ever, AND completely transform my diet at the same time.

And I did it. I never dreamed that I’d run a race like this, but I crossed that finish line.

We all know it takes commitment and perseverance, but most of us forget that the key to hitting your goals is community.

You need to surround yourself with people that PUSH you to be better.

Take my mentor Dan Pena for example. He has singularly changed my life in ways I would have never dreamed of. He pushes me so hard to be the best, that at times I hate him. But in the end, Dan tells me what I need to hear.

John Joseph is another person who I owe a lot of my recent success too. He started out as one of my guests and now he’s my brother in arms.

John Joseph challenged me to run the IRONMAN and he had my back the whole way there.

It is through them that I realized that in order to create results, you need to be surrounded with like-minded people. You need a community that pushes you further.

Without them, I can only go so far. I need them to support me when I’m struggling, keep me motivated when I’m slacking.

Having a team makes all the difference between sticking to your goals or not.

This is what I want for you. To have a team that pushes you to grow and get better together.

Who in your life pushes you to improve yourself?

Hit reply and let me know.

What is London Real?

London Real is a video talk show that introduces you to the most fascinating people in the world. It is broadcast from studios in Shoreditch, East London to television and online platforms including London Live TV, YouTube and iTunes and is hosted by Brian Rose.

Tired of being spoon-fed from the mainstream media, we’ve set out to offer a fresh, unscripted and unedited look into the world of real people. From activists to scientists, authors to fighters, politicians to drug smugglers – we present their real stories, uncensored and uncut.

My experience.

Although this may be a highly successful TV show now, it did not start there. There surely was a time when it started as an idea and went through many tough growing pains. It is during these small beginnings that you can’t wait for people, but need to use what you have and do what you can to make a start.

I already have a post called “Weed your garden”. This is a good place to start if you just don’t know what is keeping you from starting without people to help you. Once you have the picture in your mind of what you want to achieve, the next step is to start removing what is keeping you from starting. Waiting for people may be because of a lack of self confidence, fear or memories of past failures. All of these can be the reason why you do not have the courage to step out and start and therefore wait for people. In “Weed your garden” learn more on how to get past these obstacles.

To help you check your habits as part of your weeding process you can get the book Mini Habits, smaller habits, The book and the link to buy it is in the Book store.

Then what about people to help you?

It is very much true that you do need people to help you achieve your goals, but the truth is you do not need them to start moving forward. As a matter of fact, they will come to the party, so to speak, along the way. As you develop the people you need will join with you and this is where you start to accelerate. My experience is that when you start pursuing your dream, the people you need will be drawn towards you. Some call it the power of attraction, I call it favour. However, once you pursue your dream with passion people take note.

For many years of my life I was looking for people to help me, and all I become was frustrated. Amazing when you look back and see the things you have done in the past; how much you can learn. In my book This is the Day, I have a section about your mental showcase. In short this is space in your mind where you keep all the memories in the past and when you get stuck, you go spend time in front of your mental showcase, reliving these events and learn from them.

One of my favorite items in my mental showcase is a very old Nissan Cabal 3ton truck. It was during a time in my life where I have sold the business I inherited. The deal did not go as planned and I ended up in a situation where I had a family to support, but very little income. In almost desperation, I found a truck in a township covered with scrap. The interior was non-existent, although the seat’s frames where still there. All the essential parts where there but some were removed and need to be fixed and refitted. To make a long story short, I saw myself (picture in my mind) driving this truck and earn income to support my family.

I sold a motorcycle I had and bought this truck. The only other vehicle I owned, was a Datsun 1400 pick-up. I used this pick-up to tow my piece of scrap to my house. Nobody around me could see what I saw in my mind and nobody either could see this truck ever to be on the road again. It was only me and my picture energized by determination to keep going.

I found material to replace the rusted parts of the load body, rebuilt what I could not replace and used my wife’s sowing machine to re-upholster the seats. I had a low-pressure spray gun and used it to respray the truck. Many of the things I did, I have never done before, but if you are determined and focused you will be surprised to what can be done. I did finish my truck over 8 months, got it through road worthy legally and started to work with it as planned.

Only once the truck has started to work, people started getting interested in me. Doors opened for me at national companies to do transport for them. I never reached the success I hoped for at that point, as I had some weed in my garden and the wrong partner. Also, my picture was limited to having a truck to support my family and there it stopped. Due to my past, I had low self-esteem and never saw myself in a large transport operation. My perceptions limited my thinking and kept my picture small.

However, the point I want to make here is that you do not need to start with people, as you grow and develop the right people will come along. Keep on weeding your garden and enlarge your vision and you will grow into what you are intended to be and live an awesome life.

Let us fast-forward some 20 years on. In this time, I have been through divorce twice, had an accident that left me in a coma for three weeks and ended a business I had. Another business I started and run for 18 years also ended. So, at age 51 I had to start all over. My whole story and all the lessons I have learned plus a lot more advice and Biblical principles you can read in my book called This is the Day.

In 2014, I moved from a seven-bedroom house to a small room in my mom’s house. This was the start of probably the loneliest time of my life despite the fact that I stayed with family. I had to start over my life, both financially and emotionally. I was back against the wall, no friends or family to support me and there was no time to waste. I had very little left and did not want to loose that too. Further more, my mom lived from a state grand and was not in a position to support me. Therefore I had to get going again and I had to do it without people spoon feeding me.

This was when I learned the power in having the right picture in your mind. Once you have the picture set and start moving it is amazing how opportunities just come your way. This is how it seems, but the truth is, the opportunities where always there. It was because you were not looking for them, you did not see or recognize them. We can become so stuck in our ways and stuburn to change, while one by one, great opportunities pass by.

During the last months of my transport years, I reconnect with an old army buddy of mine. He also lost his business and become a tourist guide. When he was in Cape Town with a tour group and had free time, we would meet for a beer. Many times, he introduced tourism to me, but I did not see the opportunity. Only when I was forces to start over, I only saw the opportunity. Now you may say that there is the person you needed. He only showed me towards a solution to my problem, but I had to make the call, take the step and put in the hours to study. Recognizing an opportunity is one thing, but making it work for you require some action to be taken.

This is where many wait for someone to take them by hand so to speak, but there is no need to wait for somebody to make it happen for you. You need to use what you have and make the best of it. Once you have a clear picture in your mind, start where you are with what you have and even if you take baby steps, start moving and keep moving towards your dream.

Once I made up my mind to become a tourist guide, I enrolled and started studying, as I was moving forward I met people on the way that pointed me in the right direction, but for the first 3 years it was only me that had to keep driving myself and move forward. Only after I established myself as a tourist guide, completed almost 50 tours, recovered from setbacks, people started to notice me.

If you need to start over, or even if you are unhappy with where you are and want to change your life, then it starts with you. If you wait for people to take you by hand and lead you to a new life, you may wait a very long time. It may even never happen for you. If you read my book, you will see I describe three types of people. There truly are those we used to see as born with the golden spoon in the mouth but look around you and check how many do you really see. If you were one of them you surely would not be here.

My advice is, if you need to change your life and want to move to living an awesome life, don’t wait, but start doing what you can with what you have.

Hope to see many of you living and awesome life.

Gert Maritz.
